Three other types of Eyeliner

Crème, Cake & Powder

 

We took some time to discuss the two most popular types of eyeliner the last two postings.  I find myself using pencil eyeliner most of the time.  However, in the last few months I have increased my use of liquid liner.  I’m not sure of the exact reason, but I do find that I appreciate the definition that the liquid gives my eyes.  Be careful not to smudge when applying or to put it on too thick.  Especially for day wear. 

It was interesting as I prepared to write about “Types of Eyeliners” that I realized that crème, cake and powder are also used. 

 

Crème eyeliner is applied with a damp brush in the same manner as liquid.

Cake eyeliner comes as a powder.  When applying this medium be sure to dampen your brush, and then swipe it across the powder to form a liquid.  Then apply it just as you would liquid liner.  This is great to use when you want a more dramatic look.

Powder eyeliner gives the most natural look and is the easiest to work with.  When applying it dry use a brush and draw a fine a line along the base of the lashes from the outside to the inside corner of the eye.  The powder can also be applied wet.  Simply dampen the brush and apply it like liquid liner.  This technique is the same effect as liquid but is much easier to control.  This is great when you want a soft look for daytime.

 

 

 

FashionStyle Coach’s Tip:  Use an angle brush for best application.  Begin from the outer corner working your way in with light feathering strokes.

Liquid Eyeliner – Is it for you?

Liquid eyeliner creates a strong, dramatic line. 

 

Application Tip: 

When using liquid liner on the top of your eyelid, draw a continuous line starting at the inside corner to the outside corner of the eye. This gives the line a little “kick” upwards at the end.   Be sure that the most narrow part of the line is at the inside corner.  The line can gradually get thicker as you get to the outside corner. 

Be patient, this is the most difficult type of liner to apply, but you can master it with a little practice.

FashionStyle Coach’s Tip:  Never use liquid liner under the eye.  This leaves an unnatural line that can be very hard-looking.

Eyeliner – Is it for you?

Eyeliner is a matter of personal preference:  some women can’t live with it and some can’t live without it.  With my green eyes I find it very beneficial to line my eyes.  For me it just completes my eye makeup, whether soft or bold.   There are a number of ways that you can line and define your beautiful eyes:  with pencil, liquid, cake, crème or powder.  

Over the next few days, I’ll discuss these different forms.  Today we will start with the Pencil.  Pencil eyeliners contain silicone which helps the color glide on smoothly.  Be sure that the pencil you use doesn’t have too much silicone or the color will smudge and smear rather than define the eyes. 

  

Day Application: 

Begin at the outside corner of your eye and draw small, feather-like strokes connecting each one as you move toward the inside of the eye.  Blend with a small brush.  Use the same brush to apply a powder shadow in a similar color over the pencil.  This technique helps to make it look more natural, sets the color and softens the pencil line. 

Night Application:

As you line the upper lash line make sure that the line gradually grows thicker as it extends toward the outer corner of the eyes.  You want the color to be the most intense underneath the eye.  Be sure that the outer corner slowly fades as it reaches the inner corner of the eye. 

For a Natural look:

Take black eyeshadow, sometimes I use a gray shadow, and carefully push it into the base of the lashes using a fine-tipped brush.  This will define the eyes and make the lashes look thicker.  With this technique your eyes won’t appear lined.

For Luscious Lips!

While we are on the subject of Lips let’s explore some important things to do to keep those lips looking luscious.  No matter what time of the year, I find that I have to take care of my lips.  Keeping them from chapping and keeping them looking healthy is very important to me.  I’ve noticed that when I meet someone new or someone is talking to me, they are either looking at my lips or at my eyes.   Since we’ve recently did a series on Beautiful Lips at any Age, I’d like to take some time to review and discuss some  tips to help you as you care for your lips!

Let’s start with the importance of exfoliating the lips.  I know that may sound kind of weird to some, but exfoliating your lips is as important as exfoliating your face and body.  Exfoliating the lips helps to remove dead skin cells from the lips and soothe dry flaky lips.  Exfoliating also helps to remove lip color build-up and the appearance of lines around the lips.  Therefore, you should exfoliate at least once a week.  If you use a gentle exfoliate for the lips you can exfoliate daily!

Now, don’t stop there it is critical that you use a lip balm daily.  Lip balm helps to smooth and hydrate the lips.  Applying lip balm doesn’t just moisturize the lips it also protects the lips!!

Therefore, it is safe to say that the secret to luscious lips is to exfoliate once a week and applying lip balm daily.

False Eyelashes

If you want drama then wear false eyelashes.  I use to think false eyelashes were for the woman that was way too dramatic.  My daughter is on dance competition teams and sometimes when we go to competitions the dancers wear false eyelashes.  There’s that drama again.   Although I must admit that it looks great on stage. 

 

 

 

 

I must say that I have had a change of heart.   I find that although false eyelashes can be flashy there are available in so many different forms that you can wear them and no one would know.  They come in strips, individual flares and individual strands.

Depending on the look you are trying to achieve pick the either a subtle or more noticeable look.  One of the best tips for application is to apply pencil eyeliner so you can see exactly where to place them.  The closer you place them to the natural lashline the more natural they will appear.  You can always follow with a liquid liner to help disguise the lash band.  Add a thin coat of mascara to help extend the length.

Hair Tips on a Budget

I must confess, I have natural curly hair and most of my life I hated it!  It seems like the hairstyles that I admire most are the ones that I can’t wear.  I love straight hair, but I just wasn’t blessed with it.  You can imagine how I have over the looked for products to help achieve a look that I admire.  I recently found a hair brush made by Conair with great bristles and eco-friendly.  The Conair Eco-Friendly Boar & Nylon Round Brush sells for about $12.99 and can be found anywhere Conair is found.  The boar bristles work on even course and curly hair.  What I like most about it is it gets my hair really straight. 

Back in November we talk about Ionic rollers and the benefits of using.  The Belson Pro Ultra Lightweight Tourmaline Ionic Turbo Dryer sells for around $29.99.  A reasonable price for a blow dryer that gives you the best of both worlds – a nozzle for when you want to go straight and a diffuser to bring out your waves.  One thing I have found about Ionic dryers is that they dry the hair faster and smoother.

Tips for Healthy Lips

Part of my goal is to provide you with tools that you can implement immediately and that do not require you to make immediate purchases on products.  We’ve taken some time to discuss the importance of paying attention to your lips.  While I do believe that the best tool you can have in your makeup bag is an excellent lip balm, here’s a list to help improve the health of your lips. 

• East plenty of green vegetables and fruits 
• Eat foods rich in vitamins                                                  
• Increase your water intake.
